Furze Mount

Client Group and Admission Criteria

Furze Mount is registered for 19 adults with moderate to severe learning disabilities, many of whom also have physical and sensory disabilities. We have the experience and skills to meet the needs of adults with conditions such as:

  • Epilepsy
  • Communication difficulties
  • Sensory deprivation
  • Autism
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Retts Syndrome

The Service and Staff Team

The service users at Furze Mount are particularly vulnerable and as a group need a very high level of input by the staff team. One of the main aims at Furze Mount is to provide a stable and homely environment where the staff can use their specialist skills to enable the service users to maximise their potential and achieve the most enjoyment out of life no matter what the level of ability.

Many service users at Furze Mount have verbal communication difficulties. To enable them to interact with others and make choices about their daily activities, the staff team use non-verbal communications such as Makaton (sign and symbol) and pictorial boards.

The house provides downstairs accommodation for wheelchair users and has a lift for easy access throughout the home. There is also a self contained unit within Furze Mount that is provided for people who are able to be more independent.

There is a Snoezelen relaxation room that is open at all times to all service users and provide a sensory stimulating, yet relaxing, atmosphere which is complemented by access to a beautiful sensory garden.

Service users at Furze Mount have a very active social life both in the home and out in the community. This is planned around the interests of service users - such as arts and crafts, musical entertainers and health and beauty. Family and friends are very important and are encouraged to take an active role in the home.

The team can also offer support to people who need specialised diets and our strong links with local health service providers ensures quality health care.The home has suitable adaptations and mobility equipment to support those with a physical disability.

The staff team at Furze Mount receive comprehensive training specific to the needs of this particular group of service users. This is underpinned by the support from the clinical specialists within Mental Health Care.
