"outcome focused specialist health care and rehabilitation"
Independent Hospitals
MHC provides care and rehabilitation in highly specialised gender-specific hospitals.
The care pathway approach across our hospital and residential services offers patients and service users the opportunity to transfer down the pathway into wards within our hospitals, or into care homes which offer more autonomy, or up the care pathway during clinical need.
St. David's Independent Hospital for men
Location
St David's is a large country residence set in its own extensive landscaped grounds on the outskirts of the tranquil village of Carrog near Corwen in the picturesque Dee Valley. St David's is approximately 7 miles from the town of Llangollen, home of the famous International Eisteddfod. A little further away is the town of Wrexham and cities of Chester and Liverpool.
Patient Group and Admission Criteria
St David's is a 15-bed all-male service and provides care and rehabilitation for adults with a borderline to moderate learning disability with marked deficits in adaptive skills and social functioning. St David's also supports individuals with a learning disability who may also have co-existing secondary conditions such as difficult or challenging behaviours, mental health problems, ADHD or epilepsy.
St David's fulfils two primary functions:
- To rehabilitate patients leaving acute or secure services. Many of these patients will no longer require physical security but are not ready to return to their communities. St David's provides the environment, care and support necessary for patients to bridge the gap. Consequently, we are happy to receive referrals for patients who are detained under the Mental Health Act (MHA) 1983.
- To assist patients when their current placement has broken down due to their challenging behaviours. This particular service user group requires a stable and supportive environment in which their behaviours can be addressed and modified.
The Service and Staff Team
This robust service provided at St David’s will be discharge-focused, looking towards the patient gaining independence and working closely with placing authorities in achieving these objectives. At the end of the 12-week assessment process, a clear care pathway will be identified which will include specific goals and outcomes for a move towards independent living.
Treatment is designed to promote the development of both social and adaptive skills leading towards independence and autonomy. A structured behavioural programme utilising individual schedules of positive reinforcement will be the main treatment model used in developing and maintaining adaptive and social skills.
A full complement of psychiatric, psychological and nurse therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Person Centred Therapy will be offered to patients with specific difficulties. As an example of this, a patient with a history of aggressive behaviour will be offered a structured anger management course designed specifically around his individual needs. Therapeutic programmes will be offered to all patients.
The purpose-built Activities Centre within the grounds of St David's is an occupational therapy-led service providing a wide range of therapeutic activities.
The team aims to work in partnership with all service users, enabling them to develop or maintain their occupational performance skills and roles that have been affected by their mental health and any other disability. Engagement in Occupational Therapy treatment promotes well-being and a balance between productivity, self-care and leisure activities.
The staff team at St David's have a positive, empathic and tolerant approach towards patients. Establishing therapeutic alliances between the patient and the staff team is an essential part of the patient's rehabilitation and underpins the holistic service we offer at St David’s
