"outcome focused specialist health care and rehabilitation"
Independent Hospitals
MHC provides care and rehabilitation in highly specialised gender-specific hospitals.
The care pathway approach across our hospital and residential services offers patients and service users the opportunity to transfer down the pathway into wards within our hospitals, or into care homes which offer more autonomy, or up the care pathway during clinical need.
Plas Coch Independent Hospital for women
Plas Coch Independent Hospital is located on the outskirts of the picturesque town of St Asaph.
St Asaph is within easy access of the A55 expressway and is within easy reach of coastal resorts, Snowdonia National Park and the city of Chester.
The Grade II listed residence is set within its own extensive grounds allowing the patients plenty of space and opportunities for outdoor activities.
Patient Group and Admission Criteria
Plas Coch Independent Hospital is a specialised dedicated female only service, registered to admit female patients, aged 19-60 years, with a primary diagnosis of enduring mental health problems such as borderline personality disorder and treatment-resistive mental illness.
A significant majority of our patients suffering from complex psychological difficulties also report a history of psychological trauma. Individuals may also have associated disorders such as self injurious behaviour, substance misuse, eating disorder and borderline to mild learning disabilities. In addition, some patients may have a forensic history and be detained under provisions of the Mental Health Act.
Plas Coch provides a gender sensitive individually tailored programme of care based initially around the pre-admission assessment procedure.
All admissions undergo a robust 12 week assessment period which includes care and Treatment review meetings and the formulation of Treatment plans by the MDT. At the end of this period, a comprehensive, individualised, care pathway is produced covering all aspects of treatment and rehabilitation with defined objectives and outcomes.
During the rehabilitation process, support is provided to enable patients to reach their optimum level of confidence, learning and skills needed for more independent living.
The Service and Staff Team
Plas Coch comprises of three separate and distinct wards:
- Dinorben Ward is a 6 bed rehabilitation service with intensive nursing support. This locked door service provides intensive assessment, treatment and support.
- Morfa Ward is a 10 bed intensive rehabilitation ward for those patients who are considered ready to receive ongoing assessment and treatment in preparation for increased independence.
- The Coach House, separate from the main building, provides continuing care for those patients getting ready to move on from a hospital environment.
Plas Coch has a highly experienced, comprehensive and bi-lingual multi disciplinary team comprising of a Hospital Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Counseling Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Nursing team, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, full-time support team, and a Consultant Psychiatrist, who has diverse forensic experience within female secure services.
This highly staffed service is designed not only for those patients who have been receiving care in secure facilities and who no longer require such provision, but also for people who require short term admission from community based services.
The hospital also benefits from an Occupational Therapy Department which focuses on creating structure and a balance between self care, leisure and productivity for all patients at Plas Coch.
