Independent Hospitals

Plas Coch
Independent Mental Health Hospital for Women
Client Group & Admission Criteria
Plas Coch Independent Hospital is a specialised female only service, registered to admit patients aged 18-64, with a primary diagnosis of enduring mental health problems. Individuals may also have associated disorders such as borderline personality disorder, substance misuse, and eating disorders. The Service Model & Staff Team
Plas Coch’s philosophy of care is based upon the principles of rehabilitation, recovery and social inclusion, and focuses on enhancing the strengths and resilience of individuals and their families. This highly staffed service is designed for patients who have both been receiving care in secure facilities and who no longer require such provision, and also for people who require short term admission from community based services.
All patients will receive specialist therapeutic interventions designed to effectively meet their individual needs including: relapse prevention; anxiety, anger and stress management; cognitive behavioural therapy; mental health awareness sessions; alongside other educative support such as problem solving, cooking and life skills; and arts & craft.
Care Pathway
Plas Coch provides a gender sensitive, individually tailored programme of care. Following the patient’s initial 12 week assessment period, the multi-disciplinary team will prepare a detailed, individualised plan which will highlight treatment issues and the required rehabilitation pathway.
The service at Plas Coch is focused on discharge, and the multi-disciplinary team work together to ensure that an individual package of care is developed which works towards meeting the treatment goals and moving the patient along an appropriate care pathway. This includes individual time with members of the multidisciplinary team as well as participation in group activities. A robust risk assessment underpins this whole process.
The service at Plas Coch comprises of three separate and distinct wards:
- Dinorben Ward – offers a six bed locked door service, which provides intensive nursing support in a controlled access environment beneficial for the assessment, treatment and support of patients requiring a physically robust placement.
- Morfa Ward – provides a 10 bed intensive rehabilitation ward for those patients who are considered ready to receive ongoing assessment and treatment in preparation for increased independence.
- The Coach House - separate from the main building, The Coach House provides eight continuing care beds for those patients getting ready to move on from a hospital environment. Transfer to The Coach House should be the beginning of the discharge phase of the patient’s placement at Plas Coach.
The person-centered nature of the service at Plas Coch means that the care pathway is flexible to the needs of the patient. Individuals can step-up or step-down through the pathway to make sure that their needs are met in the most appropriate setting, depending on the levels of support and supervision they require.
