Physical Disability

Furze Mount

Furze Mount is an established service for individuals who may have sensory, communication and physical problems as well as having a learning disability. The home encourages active participation through practical, educational and community based activities.

Client Group & Admission Criteria

Through our highly specialized service at Furze Mount, MHC provides care and support for 19 male and female service users, aged 18-65, who have moderate to severe learning disabilities. Many of whom also have physical and sensory disabilities

The Service & Staff Team

Due to some of the individual’s complexities at Furze Mount, the client group here is particularly vulnerable and need a very high level of input by the staff team. The staff team at Furze Mount has the experience to meet the needs of adults with conditions such as:

  • Epilepsy
  • Communication difficulties
  • Sensory deprivation
  • Autism
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Retts Syndrome
  • Incontinence

One of the main aims of Furze Mount is to provide a stable and homely environment for individuals. The staff utilise their specialist skills to enable service users to maximize their potential and achieve the most enjoyment out of life. Service users have access to the local college environments of Rhyl and LLandrillo, the local Leonard Cheshire Hydrotherapy Pool, and access the swimming pool in Llandudno (which caters for individuals who require hoists etc). Residents enjoy activities such as disabled horse riding and disabled cycling.

Many service users at Furze Mount have verbal communication difficulties, so to enable them to interact with others and make choices about their daily activities, the staff use non-verbal communications such as Makaton (sign and symbol) and pictorial boards. The environment is geared to support individuals using hoists, gantry hoists, and a lift is also used for some residents.
