Recovery Model
New Hall Independent Hospital is at the early stages of embracing a recovery based approach across its care pathway. Our service embraces the principles of recovery, focusing on positive well being and rehabilitation, the formal introduction of the recovery model is about building on our current holistic individualised approach to mental well being.
At New Hall we understand that recovery does not mean "cure”, it is about individuals seeing themselves as capable of recovery rather than as passive recipients of services and interventions. New Hall offers patients an holistic approach to their care and treatment enabling them to improve all elements of their life which impact on their mental well being. Some patients require one to one help and interventions such as anger management but may also need opportunities to learn new skills, such as domestic skills, develop their numeracy and literacy abilities which may have been unused or dormant for some time. Fundamentally we respect the expertise of people in knowing what helps.
New Hall’s starting point is that recovery is about people seeing themselves as capable of recovery; this provides us with an opportunity to work with them. We understand that everyone has a part to play in this process including the multi-disciplinary team in providing the patients with the opportunities to lead their own journey through recovery and we ultimately respect the individual rights to choose their path to recovery.
New Hall aims to help people with mental health problems to move beyond traditional ideas of survival and existence through encouraging and supporting them to move forward, develop skills, carry out daily activities and develop relationships that give their lives meaning. We allow more time for people, for listening, for talking and for doing things together.
Our approach to recovery emphasises that while people may not have full control over their symptoms, they can have full control over their lives and their future. Mental illness and social attitudes to mental illness often impose limits on people experiencing ill health. Recovery looks beyond these limits to help people achieve their own goals and aspirations, recovery is about personal growth and developing resilience. We acknowledge the impact of stigma and social inequality and work with individuals to challenge these. New Hall encourages the use of advocacy and empowers individuals through providing them with chances to be actively involved in hospital through patient forums and workshops.
