Cedar Activity Centre, Highfield Park

Example of work produced at Cedar Activity CentreThe Cedar Activity Centre was opened in January 2007 and is successfully managed by Nicole Mitchell.  The aim of the centre is to offer a wide variety of easily adapted, socially inclusive, fun activities on and off Highfield Park.

Nicole hopes to enable people to achieve an individual level of success and independence in all areas of their lives.

Cedar Activity Centre offers a wide range of activities which can be geared to the individual's abilities and needs.  These activities are selected by the Service Users in conjunction with the support team.  It offers arts and crafts, games and sports and opportunities to learn daily living skills, for example, reading, writing, basic cookery and work experience opportunities.

A wide range of seasonal events are also arranged throughout the year, these include a summer sports day, parties and disco's, various musical concerts and competitions.

Nicole completed a Foundation Course in General Art and Design and then went on to study Fine Art and Photography.  Hence the love of all things 'crafty'.  From being a student, she then went on to work in a range of residential facilities.  She has cared for the elderly, people with learning disabilties and with enduring mental health problems.  She then went on to study Occupational Therapy at the St Andrews School of Occupational Therapy.

Setting up and running Cedar Activity Centre has been a huge challenge and great fun for Nicole, she passionately believes that offering valued, appropriate, socially inclusive occupation and activities is essential.
