Coed Bach is a purpose built Occupational Therapy Centre which was officially opened by Eleanor Burnham, AM in January 2007.
The centre which is located within the grounds of St. David's Independent Hospital, Carrog, Corwen, facilitates meaningful occupation to improve occupational performance for male patients with a diagnosis of learning disability and associated complex needs.
The Occupational Therapy team consists of Sara Coey (Occupational Therapist) and Geoff and Cathy Wild (Occupational Therapy technical instructors). The Hospital nursing team and support workers also have input into the centre. This MDT approach ensures that the centre and St. David's Independent Hospital continue to grow into a very successful service. All patients are continually assessed and treatment plans formulated using the Model of Human Occupation.
The centre focuses on creating structure and a balance between self care, leisure and
productivity. Input is tailored to meet each individuals need, however can range from literacy and numeracy, music and art, metal detecting, fishing and gardening. The patient's have successfully completed a project on castles and Roman history which involved field trips and written work - a great achievement by everyone.
Community integration (based on O'Brian five accomplishments) is promoted and facilitated; patients regularly use community services as part of their rehabilitation. The team have been using the "Keep Safe" document written by the Home Office to raise awareness about community safety. Each patient was also enrolled on Mencap's Gateway Award, an award scheme which challenges individuals in the following areas; hobbies, service, adventure challenge, physical recreation and lifestyle. Each person is working towards the Bronze level award.
Focus on domestic activities of daily living is a priority and skills are taught and maintained to increase a person's independence. This includes shopping, budgeting, planning and preparing meals. A positive approach to learning is always taken and all activities aim to increase self esteem and confidence.
